Frequently asked questions
The insurance contract is concluded on the assumption that it will remain valid throughout the entire insurance period, but there are exceptions where the contract may be terminated before the end date, for exmaple:
• In the event of the destruction or theft of the property;
• If the vehicle cannot be used for technical reasons for more than 1 month;
• If the vehicle is removed from the register;
• Upon the termination of a leasing contract, if the vehicle is returned to the lessor;
• When the property is sold.
It is important to keep in mind that a motor insurance policy can be terminated either by the policyholder or by the new person responsible for the insurance. For example, if a vehicle has been sold and re-registered under the new owner's name in the traffic register, the previous owner can no longer cancel the policy, as all rights and obligations are immediately transferred to the new owner. After the vehicle is re-registered in the traffic register, the new owner can enter into a new motor insurance contract, which will automatically terminate the validity of the previous one.
If the insurance contract is terminated before the end of its validity period, BTA has the right to retain the insurance premium for the period that has already passed. The premium paid for the remaining period will be refunded, except in cases where the insured item has been destroyed and BTA has already paid out compensation.
Casco insurance generally remains valid until the end of the insurance period, even if the leasing period ends or the vehicle changes ownership.
However, in the case of a change in ownership, the insurer must be notified, as the insurance contract is tied to a specific policyholder and their interests. If the new owner wishes to continue the coverage, a new casco insurance contract usually needs to be concluded.

An insurance policy cannot be terminated retroactively if a claim has already occurred and the insurer has been notified.
If the policy is nevertheless terminated after a claim has been submitted, this does not release the insurer from the obligation to pay compensation — provided the incident took place during the policy’s validity and all conditions were met.
However, terminating the policy may affect the refund of the insurance premium. For example, if compensation has already been paid out, the premium paid for the unused period may not be refunded.
If you are considering terminating the policy after a claim, we recommend contacting BTA directly at +372 5 68 68 668 to review the situation clearly.
